About Fort Hood, TX

Fort Hood, Texas is a prominent military community located in Bell County in the heart of Central Texas. Served by a single ZIP code, 76544, it is one of the most recognized military installations in the United States and plays a central role in the regional economy and culture. The area is home to thousands of active-duty service members, civilian employees, and military families who make up the fabric of this unique Texas community.

Location & geography

Fort Hood is situated in Central Texas, positioned between the cities of Killeen to the east and Copperas Cove to the west, both of which serve as key gateway communities to the installation. The terrain is characteristic of the Texas Hill Country transition zone, featuring rolling limestone hills, cedar and oak brush, and open grasslands that stretch across the installation's vast grounds. Fort Hood covers 74.39 square miles of land and 0.17 square miles of water, making it one of the largest military installations in the country by area.

Community & economy

Fort Hood's community is defined by military service, with the installation supporting a large population of soldiers, their families, and the many civilians and contractors who work alongside them every day. Life on and around Fort Hood revolves around the rhythms of military duty, with schools, commissaries, recreational facilities, and medical services all oriented toward supporting service members and their dependents. The broader economic character of the region is deeply intertwined with the U.S. Army, and the installation functions almost as a self-contained city within Bell County.

Transportation

Fort Hood is accessible via several key roadways, including Interstate 14 (also known as U.S. Highway 190), which runs along the southern edge of the installation and connects it to Killeen and the broader Central Texas region. Texas State Highway 195 provides access along the installation's eastern corridor toward Georgetown and Austin to the south. The nearest commercial airport is Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport (GRK), located just a few miles east of the installation off State Highway 195, providing direct passenger service to several major hubs.

History

Fort Hood was established in 1942 as Camp Hood, named in honor of Confederate General John Bell Hood, a native Texan, and was originally created as a training center for tank destroyer units during World War II. It was redesignated as a permanent installation and renamed Fort Hood in 1950, eventually growing into the largest active-duty armored post in the United States Army. The installation has played a pivotal role in nearly every major U.S. military engagement since World War II, serving as the home of the storied 1st Cavalry Division and III Armored Corps, among other major units.

Did you know?

Fort Hood is one of only two U.S. military installations large enough to be home to two full armored divisions simultaneously, a distinction that underscores its immense strategic importance. In 2023, the installation was officially renamed Fort Cavazos in honor of General Richard E. Cavazos, the first Hispanic four-star general in U.S. Army history, though many residents and references still use the historic Fort Hood name.
